Jack Of All Trades But Master Of None!

istock_000006916783xsmall2 If you’re in the wilderness and you need to open a can of beans to put on the fire then having an all purpose Swiss Army knife that has several utility functions would be wonderful.

On That note there are plenty of msp marketing programs that have the same philosophy that it’s best to stuff tons of marketing material that covers many categories like email marketing, SEO, Copy writing, face-to-face sales training, operations management, telemarketing scripts etc…

Many of the managed services sales training programs that have this broad catch-all approach can help a start up computer consultant get off the ground initially.  However is it always best to use a blunt universal instrument when a specialized tool might be readily available?

Use The Right Tool For The Job

Would you use a Swiss army knife to cut a juicy new york strip steak in a four star restaurant when the proper utensils were laying right there?

Of course not, but the problem seems to be that many computer consultants who receive these bundled marketing packages feel they have already paid for each segment that was included.

Therefore many companies may ask why they should pay for more training on subjects that are covered in their marketing took kit?

istock_000010103556xsmall2Of course it’s funny that many times I receive calls from these same consultants that are looking for a ‘done for you’ IT marketing service.

However, when I offer our training service instead they decline by telling me telling me they already have all the training they need.  This answer always baffles me because it simply defies logic.

If a sales person had been trained properly to do telemarketing then why would they need an outsourced it lead generation service?

Seek Out The Expert In The Field

The reality is that a jack of all trades is really a master of none.  I recently read the book, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, that covers an unconventional theory about the real triggers for success.  The one principal that stood out in my mind was the 10,000 hour rule for success.

The basic idea is that the rare individuals who has put in the hard time in just one discipline eventually become the master of that universe.

Now if you have some basic materials that covers a few marketing topics then just view these as mere training wheels.  However you will still need advanced training just like someone that takes a basic math course cannot be a mathematician without years of dedication and training!

Once you have decided on the one marketing technique that’s going to be your focus, out of all the disciplines that a catch-all package includes, then seek out an advanced expert that has specialized experience on that topic!
